Spanish Moss is a striking addition to any plant collection. This pot-less, rootless plant is easy to care for and adds a vibrant contrast to often green houseplants.
Tallandsia useniodes is an epiphyte (a plant that grows on another plant) that hails from the humid forests of central and southern America. Typically found growing from tree branches in impressive sweeps of grey, these plants naturally draw water and feed from the rain and humid air.
In the home, indirect light is best. So keep them out of your south facing window in the summer. They’ll do well in a bright bathroom as they’ll love the humidity created by your shower steam. They do need sunlight though so don’t hang them in a bathroom with no natural light.
Watering can be achieved in two ways. The first is misting, but you’ll need to do this a few times a week to keep them happy. Alternatively, you can soak them. Simply leave them in some tepid water for about 10 – 20 minutes once a week or so. Remove and shake to dry then hang them up again.
Feed your Spanish moss by using rainwater when you water or adding a light fertiliser to the water every once in a while.
In warmer sheltered gardens you can keep these plants outside all year round, don’t forget to water them in warmer weather though.
